UNPRECEDENTED: FT Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston, renowned writer and anthropologist, documentary film maker, one of my favorite writers, and so much more is one of the greatest writers of all time and has created some of the most renowned work in African American literature. 

When Zora was 13 her mother died and her father essentially abandoned her with nothing. She went from one relative’s house to the next for a place to sleep and began to support herself by cleaning houses. Deep in her soul, Zora knew she was meant to write, and to be able to write she needed to be able to read well and understand what it means to tell a beautiful story. 

So while cleaning houses, Zora found herself surrounded by incredible libraries owned by the wealthy white families she worked with and began to read these books, that she otherwise wouldn’t have access to to begin mastering the english language. 

When she was 25 she had the opportunity to become a maid for a musical troupe, which was exciting because she now had the opportunity to work even more closely with highly educated and creative people. The proximity to this success allowed her to learn even more of what it would take from her to achieve her dreams. 

After 18 months, Zora quit this traveling job with this music troupe. She saw the world, learned a ton, and built enough relationships to understand that now was the time for her to step into something even greater. Zora then completed her high school education and went onto Howard University where she began her work as a creative legend and a pivotal contributor to the Harlem Renaissance. 

Zora’s success began with her investing in herself when she had nothing. She still believed in her eventual success as a writer and invested the time between multiple cleaning jobs to focus on reading and understanding the foundations of great leaders. 

Pouring the time, money, and hope into yourself is a leading indicator for success that most people talk themselves out of because it is the unsexy work. 

It is the work of believing in yourself before anyone else does, pouring resources into yourself, and knowing every second you invest in yourself now is going to pay off for yourself a million times over in the future. 

It is this belief that allowed Zora Neal Hurston to go on and become one of the most influential Black Woman writers in history. 

While I do not know Zora, I believe that what motivated her to defy impossible odds and create a legacy for herself was a commitment to illuminating the beauty of Black womanhood in the rural south. This was work that no one else was doing and there was no clear road map from point A to point Z. There was no rule book. There was no support. Yet, her care about her people was a strong value that allowed her to make her success a reality. 

This is the work of those who walk the unprecedented path.
