Ep 9: Outcome vs. Process Careers

Apr 07, 2025

Our parents were taught to prioritize a linear approach to careers.

You go to school, get a job, and stay in that job until you retire.

Loyalty, consistency, and hard work was rewarded and guaranteed to provide you with some stability. This is an outcome oriented approach to careers where getting a “good job” is placed on a pedestal

Today’s workforce is much different from this.

Employees are more disposable and workplace cultures are demanding more and more from employees every year leading to high rates of burnout, while wages stay stagnant.

People who are experiencing stability, greater freedom and financial success, are people who are getting very clear on the life they want to live and who are building income streams to support them in building this life.

This approach is process oriented. Instead of focusing on the employer and institutions for validation, you focus on what feels good for you now, what impact you would like to have, and the financial goals that are important for you and your long term values.

This is how creatives build out careers they enjoy. They are hungrier for the impact they would like to make over the traditional work your way up mentality. They are collaborating. Most importantly, they are having fun along the way.

I share more about how you can begin integrating this approach into your career on this podcast episode titled The Fearless Career.

And as always, I’d love to hear from you - would you shift your career to become more process

based? (reply back if you’d like to chat!)
