How internalized oppression stops you from building wealth

Let’s put an end to the financial-bitch-slap
Last week I talked about the dynamic of wanting values aligned wealth
Today we are diving deep on the proverbial financial-bitch-slapping I see my clients go through when trying to create new income streams that prevents these income streams from getting off the ground (and YESSS I’m coaching a group through this specific dynamic in REBEL on Thursday and you can sign up and join the conversation if you are ready to put an end to your own bitch-slapping. )
I call this the financial-bitch-slap because no one else describes this dynamic:
- Your job teaches you a third of your life has a specific numeric value - this is your salary and the amount you are paid by spending a third of your life working
- Society teaches you that this job and this value is your inherent worthiness - it’s the interest you get when you tell someone what you do.
- Your religion and political beliefs may tell you having too much is a sin, or eat the rich, or money makes people evil
- Your investments tell you money is out of your control and is purely a system that grows in time
- Your family teaches you the degree to which money matters - it’s why mom/dad can’t come to your soccer games, It’s the nameless reasons why we don’t talk to so and so cousin
I can go on for hours but you have enough context to see where I’m going with this.
This is the financial bitch slap and it hurts, mostly because it prevents you from clearly seeing your own value and self worth.
All of this different noise can become a self punishing endless cycle where you believe you have too much wealth and are doing too much harm because of the limited privileges you already have and through understanding that there are people struggling in this world
At the same time feeling like you aren't good enough to earn more because your life has been linked to a number in your career and changing that value amount can feel like something you aren't allowed to do leaving you with a stunted sense of self worth
At the same time you may not have the financial freedom and flexibility to live a values aligned enjoyable life without going into debt
At the same time feeling paralyzed and stuck within the limitations of your current income streams and feeling too afraid to branch out and do something different
This is one of the grittier parts of internalized capitalism because it boils down to the value you may hold for yourself, the value you hold for your labor, and the value you hold for the potential labor you may or may not create.
AND this is the emotional and mental baggage we carry with us when we work on our "money mindset" to become more open and capable of receiving wealth.
As we spoke about last week, money is an amplifier, and the reason why having a money mindset that aligns with your values is important is because otherwise the decisions being amplified reinforce a state of confusion and powerlessness within you like:
- Not negotiating a higher income because you work in a non-profit
- Not trying to create something on your own because you're too afraid of the financial repercussions
- Not changing your field out of a fear of pay changes
- Not saving because money goes into coping mechanisms to get through the day to day
- Not charging more in your business or seeing the value your work can provide to others because it is undervalued in your current environment
Later this week in REBEL we are going to dive deep into the specific money questions and beliefs that are holding people back.
